Composite fillings, or white fillings, are fillings made to match the shade of your teeth. For that reason, white fillings are commonly used on front teeth where a natural appearance is of the utmost importance. However, they are a great option for back teeth as well, and they are often ideal for decayed or damaged teeth.
It only takes a single visit to prepare and place these fillings. First, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and very mild acid solution is applied. Next, the bonding agent and several layers of the composite are brushed on. Finally, a special light will be used to harden the filling, and it will be polished.
You will be able to eat and resume normal activity immediately following your appointment. While there may be some sensitivity to temperature for a brief amount of time, it is important to contact your dentist if this is ongoing or persistent.
For most, these white fillings will be far more desirable than older versions. They offer a more natural appearance, are equally durable, and are made without mercury that was used in some older fillings. If you currently have older, metal fillings, they may be replaced with this more aesthetically pleasing option.
